Arm cross by Giants’ Wilson is tribute to God, Christ

Brian Wilson San Francisco Closter

San Francisco’s Brian Wilson displays his faith with this gesture after recording the final out of the World Series on Monday night. Photo by Eric Gay, The Associated Press

If you watched the San Francisco Giants clinch the World Series title Monday night, you might have noticed the crossed-arm gesture Giants closer Brian Wilson made after striking out the final Texas Ranger batter to win the Series.

Well, according to Wilson, via San Jose Mercury News (one of our sister papers) blogger Andrew Baggarly, the gesture is a tribute to God and the Trinity. Here’s an excerpt and a link to the blog.

And also it’s taking into consideration my own walks in life. For instance, when I cross my arms, I have my left hand in the fist and my right hand goes underneath pointing with my (index) finger. What I’ve taken into my own belief is that this finger represents one man. I’m that one person. And I can only go so far in life leaning on my own understandings and my own strength. The fist represents the power of the Holy Trinity: the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. The fist is symbolic of a circle. It’s never-ending. This strength will only continue to grow. So here’s the strength of God and the strength of man. And without him, I am nothing. I can only go so far in this life. But when I cross, I now have this one person with the strength of Christ, and I can do anything through Christ who strengthens me. I can get over any battles in life.”

Third Day and praying dog

So I had to watch the YouTube video of the praying dog and the veteran. And the first thing I noticed is that Mac Powell of Third Day is playing in the background — “Born Again.”

CNN did a video story on disabled veteran Steven Boyd and Jengo, the praying dog. It’s a nice piece of how he saved the dog and how the dog ended up saving his life.

Tenth Avenue North’s Donehey finds beauty

Mike Donehey of Tenth Avenue North

Tenth Avenue North frontman Mike Donehey says he was rebellious as a child. The band played Faith Bible Chapel in Arvada on Thursday. Photo by Eliza Marie Somers

As a child, Mike Donehey didn’t take kindly to authority. But as the years added on, he has become one of the more introspective Christian rock artists today.

I was rebellious as a child,” explains Donehey, lead vocalist for Tenth Avenue North. “When I was 4 years old, we went to Disney World and my mom had me on a leash so I wouldn’t get lost. Well, she looks around and sees a child who looks like me and is dressed like me. Well it was me. I took off the wrist band and put it on another kid. I went through life like that until I was in my 20s.”

And if not for a car accident, Donehey might still be fighting those authority figures. While recovering from a broken back, the then teenager asked his parents for a guitar and inspiration struck.

It was the first time that I ever slowed down,” he says. “I always loved music and it seemed like a good thing.”

That good thing pointed Donehey, who says he “knew there was something else out there,” in a new direction and while a student at Palm Beach Atlantic University in Florida, he and a group of buddies founded Tenth Avenue North. Since its inception more than 10 years ago, the band has seen several players come and go, but its message is still the same: Truth and Beauty.

Johnny Cash headlines GMA inductees

Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash in 1977. The country music star will be inducted into the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame in January. The Associated Press file photo

Johnny Cash headlines the 2011 GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame class that will be inducted Jan. 24

Also to be inducted are DeGarmo & Key, Golden Gate Quartet and Bill “Hoss” Allen. The ceremony is free and will take place at Trinity Music City Auditorium in Henderson, Tn.

Gospel music was an integral part of Cash’s music. He initially went to audition at Sun Records to record gospel music. Along with his illustrious country music career, Cash recorded many gospel albums, including “Cash: Ultimate Gospel,” “My Mother’s Hymn Book,” and “The Gospel According to Johnny Cash.”

Duo Eddie DeGarmo and Dana Key were one of the first Christian music acts to be aired on MTV. Over 17 years they recorded 15 albums and received seven Grammy nominations and 17 Dove Award nominations for their blues-influenced rock.

The Golden Gate Quarter started singing in the mid-1930s out of the group’s high school in Norfolk, Va. The jazz group performed at President Franklin Roosevelt’s inauguration and they impressed Eleanor so much that she invited the group back to the White House for numerous appearances.

Allen’s interest in gospel music began as a child. He was born in wealthy Catholic family, but it was an African-American “nanny” who raised him, taking him to church on Sundays where he was introduced to soulful gospel music. As a DJ at WLAC, whose signal stretched from Mobile, Ala., to Michigan, Allen played such newcomers as James Brown and Jimi Hendrix. In 1975, he started “Early Morning Gospel Time with Hossman” to showcase regional black gospel acts. His program continued until 1993, almost 10 years after the station turned into a talk-radio venue — except for Allen’s program.

Heavy metal mainstream artists Papa Roach is teaming up with Skillet for a fall tour that will hit Denver on Tuesday Oct. 26 at the Fillmore Auditorium.

Talk about a weird juxtaposition. I’m trying to score an interview with a member of Papa Roach, so keep an eye on this site.

In the meantime, here’s a little piece about Skillet.

Jeremy Camp’s new CD “We Cry Out”

If you were not one of the lucky fans to pick up Jeremy Camp’s CD “We Cry Out: The Worship Project” during his visit to Coors Field earlier this month, then make a beeline to your local outlet — be it iTunes or a brick-and-mortar structure for this inspiring offering.

An ordained minister, Camp felt compelled to do a worship project that features favorites such as “Everlasting God,” “You Never Let Go” and “Mighty to Save” along with six songs written by Camp and collaborators, including Dove Award-winning songwriter Matt Maher and Jon Egan.

I wanted to go back to my roots,” Camp said. “I was a worship leader growing up. And I have to say that this has been my most refreshing time doing music — there was something different about this.”

That something different can be heard in his rendition of “Overcome” by Jon Egan.

BarlowGirl concert causes military strife

The U.S. Army is investigating whether soldiers who refused to attend a BarlowGirl concert were “punished” by being banished to their barracks.

At Fort Eustis in Newport Beach, Va., a staff sergeant told soldiers they could attend the Christian music concert or stay in their barracks. But the 80 to 100 or so soldiers who decided not to attend the concert were told they had to stay in the barracks and clean them. They were also told not to use cellphones or computers. Here’s a link to the AP story.

The officer apologized to the soldiers and said it was not his intent to proselytize.

What do you think about this?

Obama a Christian — Does it matter to you?

The White House issued a statement today stating that President Barack Obama is a Christian who prays every day. How important is it to you that the president of the United States is a Christian?

The White House statement comes in the wake of the president saying that Muslims have the RIGHT to build a mosque near Ground Zero. BUT the other thing he said was that he would NOT take a position on if it SHOULD be built. A big, big difference.

This is America and don’t forget religious freedom is guaranteed in our Bill of Rights. The very first amendment. Just stating a fact.

Why Tebow and not Floyd Little or others?

Tim Tebow

While in college, Tim Tebow donned Bible verses on his eye black to show his religious convictions. Photo by Gary W. Green/Orlando Sentinel

I ran into Woody Paige after the Rockies game on Sunday. And as we watched the final quarters of the Broncos game, Woody stated that when he was at the NFL Hall of Fame induction ceremony a couple of weeks ago every one of the inductees thanked God. So, why does Tim Tebow get criticized for his faith and others don’t?

Good question. Why do you think Tebow is bashed more than say Floyd Little who said he “gives all the glory to his lord and savior, Jesus Christ” as the very first words in his induction speech?

Rockies embrace Faith Day, Jeremy Camp

Jeremy Camp at Coors Field

Jeremy Camp performs at Coors Field as part of the Colorado Rockies’ Faith Day. Photos by Eliza Marie Somers

Faith Day at Coors Field took on a much deeper meaning this year as the Rockies and their fans continue to deal with the sudden death of president Keli McGregor, who passed away in April.

Faith Day had been going on in other ballparks for several years, and Keli really pushed to have Faith Day here,” Rockies general manager Dan O’Dowd said. “More than anybody it represents how he lived his life. Keli really loved Faith Day.”

Faith Day, in its sixth “season” with the Rockies, featured Grammy Award nominee and multiple Dove Award winner Jeremy Camp performing after the game. But before the game, Camp lead worship and shared his testimony with the team and coaches. Watch an interview with Jeremy Camp

Faith Day is about keeping things in perspective,” manager Jim Tracy said. “Life has its ups and downs, highs and lows and somewhere in between is normalcy. And it’s good to have that perspective.

If you look at our season it has been the same way — highs and lows. But some how, we’ve been able to draw strength and carry on,” Tracy explained. “We’ve been hit in the stomach a lot this year, but we have not made any excuses. And Keli hated excuses. I truly believe that we have drawn some strength from him. Look, we lost our president, I don’t know how you can get hit any harder.”

Jeremy Camp at Coors Field

Jeremy Camp at Coors Field

Jeremy Camp is shown on the Coors Field scoreboard as he performs as part of the Colorado Rockies’ Faith Day. Photos by Eliza Marie Somers

Jeremy Camp is getting the crowd going at Coors Field as the Rockies celebrate Faith Day today.

Ubaldo Jimenez, in a quest for his 18th win of the season, brought in a full house and more than half the fans are staying to hear Camp.

Rockies outfielder Seth Smith started the celebration with a little devotional before introducing Camp, who started the concert with a piano solo.

I’m amazed watching Camp jump around the stage and getting the crowd going with “I’m Alive,” as he had about an hour sleep last night. He flew into Colorado after a concert in Michigan, the he was wisked off to Coors Field to lead worship for the team.

With a new CD coming out in a week, Camp gave a preview with his first single off the album “Jesus Saves.” And for some lucky fans, the band is sellling the new CD for $5 after the concert, but there’s only 5,000. Even his tour manager doesn’t have one.!!
