Maher expands on strengths with “Love in Between”

[media-credit name=“Courtesy of Provident Label Group” align=“aligncenter” width=“480”]Matt Maher cover of The Love in Between[/media-credit]

Matt Maher plays on his strengths by expanding on his Americana-folk-country sound with the release of “The Love in Between,” his third CD on Essential Records. In the past few weeks I find myself constantly reaching for this CD. I like the country-rock vibe that resonates across the 12 songs. Maher calls it “blue collar gospel.”

And it’s not just the music that delivers strong vocals it’s the lyrics. Lyrics that pose some tough questions to the listener.

His first single “Turn Around,” is getting major airtime on the Christian radio stations and showcases the theme of this CD, with even a “Hey” thrown in there. The song spotlights the trouble of an addict, a mother trying to make ends meet and calls us to realize that God’s grace is there to help us in all of our situations.

You don’t have to take the broken road
You can turn around and come back home

Broncos’ quarterback Tim Tebow a receiver?

The Denver Broncos are so short-handed that the team used  backup quarterback Tim Tebow as a slot receiver against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

Why, you ask? Eddie Royal went down with a groin injury leaving the Broncos short at WR. As a quarterback, Tim Tebow is required to know everyone’s assignment on offense. Yes, every QB needs to know what his offensive teammates are suppose to do on every play.

And, this is big, Tebow is a big target (6‑foot‑3, 245 pounds) and a workout machine, making him a true all-around athlete.

Jesus: Most engaging on Facebook

Jesus Daily gets a thumbs up from Facebook users as the most engaging page, beating out Justin Bieber, Ashton Kutcher and even Lady Gaga, according to All Facebook, which keeps track of Facebook traffic.

It’s not the number of fans Jesus Daily has that is beating out these pop icons, but interactions — posts, comments, likes, etc.

Here’s a link to an ABCNews story.

It made me smile when I read this story that Jesus — well the Jesus Daily page — is drawing fans on Facebook.

E‑mail error sends me Christian products

I subscribe to a gardening e‑mail, and on Labor Day I got an e‑mail for a sale on fall bulbs. Well it turns out it was an e‑mail for Christian products for children. Would it bother you to receive an e‑mail like this?

It’s funny because I just tossed the original e‑mail in my trash folder and only opened it because I got an e‑mail from the gardening company with an apology.

Rockies’ Aaron Cook takes time to share faith

While Aaron Cook may hold the most wins in Rockies history at 72, his career has been anything but smooth sailing.

Freak injuries — blood clots in his lungs that required rib surgery to alleviate, a broken shinbone from a linedrive and a broken ring finger from getting caught in a door — are to blame for a career that has had more ups and downs than the Mind Eraser at Elitch Gardens. Injuries that would have caused others to scream “Uncle” but not Cook.

My faith helped me a lot during those times,” Cook said, quoting James 1:2–4

(“When troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. 3 For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4 So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.” NLT)

When troubles come it is a testing of your faith and perseverance. In my baseball life there has been a lot of different things that have happened that I shouldn’t be here if not for God. All the adversity that I have been through has helped me draw closer to God and has made me a better man. And if you look at it that way it doesn’t seem all that bad.”

Yes, making a living in the major leagues is not a bad life after all, but how does a one stay grounded?

I have a wife and three kids and my wife grounds me everyday,” Cook said with a chuckle, “In baseball we are waited on hand and foot. Your suitcase is taken to the hotel, people pack your bags and when you go home you have to take care of your family and kids. You get a reality check.”

Cook is outspoken in his faith, but not one to push his beliefs onto others.

I grew up in the church, and I’ve never been afraid to say what I believe no matter a clubhouse or on a mission trip. It’s who I am,” said Cook, who has spent his entire career with the Rockies. “ I try to treat people all the same, like Jesus did, and when you get an opportunity to share, share. … This clubhouse has been crazy this year with all the new people. I just met J.C. Romero, and he’s a strong believer. We found out we have a couple of mutual friends who do mission trips. That’s just God’s timing.”

Don’t call it a coincidence with Cook, as his wife says, they are God appointments, and it appears that Cook’s appointment at this time is to shine his light on the stage that is major-league baseball.

This baseball world is fun,” Cook said. “But I tell people all the time, ‘It’s what I do, not who I am.’”

Casting Crowns breaks out Courageous

Casting Crown will be performing Sunday after the Rockies game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Photo courtesy of Provident Label Group

This story was written before Casting Crowns played at a Colorado Rockies’ baseball game in Denver. Mark Hall elaborates on the band’s new CD, “Come to the Well.” I hope you find it insightful.

Are you having trouble connecting with you kids, especially now with all the peer pressure they are confronting as a new school year starts? Want an easy way to get in their good graces while putting them in good graces? Grab some tickets to Sunday’s Rockies game against the Los Dodgers.

Along with hosting Los Angeles, the Rockies are once again putting on Faith Day with Grammy Award-winning band Casting Crowns, which will entertain the crowd after the game. Faith Day also might bring the Rox some good karma as they try to break a 17-game losing streak on Sundays – a modern day record.

While Casting Crowns has garnered recognition for its music, the band has not lost sight of its original purpose – youth ministry.

All of our songs come from our ministry in a local church south of Atlanta,” said Mark Hall, the frontman for the band “All the songs start out because of our Bible study or what is happening with our community.”
