Ageless Amy Grant gives advice to young artists

Amy Grant, who turns 50 on Thanksgiving this year, says that the beauty of aging is you get to do what you love. And for Amy that love is music.

I know the power of music and I had just as much fun doing a Christmas concert at the Cumberland Assisted Living home for my mom and dad… for the wheelchairs and gray hairs. And it was fabulous. Just doing something you love as you get older,” Grant said. “Taking a hike at 70 or riding a bike at 60. It’s whoo hoo.”

Her advice to young artists: “Surround yourself with good people. People with integrity. And be gracious to everybody you meet. That coffee clerk might be the next head of the next biggest company. And that top executive might be selling perfume at the counter the next day. We are just a little tiny piece of the puzzle. And what we do is such a tiny wedge of this gigantic pie.”

Tenth Ave. North’s aching heart

Last year, Tenth Avenue North won the Dove Award for best new artist and this year the trio won the Dove for song of the year for “By Your Side.” Wow what a ride, but Mike Donehey is more modest.

You know people ask us all the time what’s it like to be successful and play in front of all these people. And I say, ‘You don’t understand why we write music. We write music because I see these kids who just don’t get it. I write songs to make disciples out of them.’ I have this ache in my heart. You can tell when you talk to people about Jesus … you can see if they get it. And I see these kids and it only increases the ache.”

Jason Ingram who co-wrote the song with Donehey and Philip Larue, said: “I’ve never been around musicians who are as passionate about God. They are not pursuing music, they are pursuing God.”

Larue also said about the songwriting process: “We write what we want to hear.” Added Donehey: “A song is like a relationship. The hook is the first date and the lyrics is what keeps the relationship going.”

And get this the song was written 2.5 years ago.

Red: Dove is as good as a Grammy

Red won a Dove Award for Rock Album of the Year, and earlier this year the band went to the Grammy Awards as it was nominated for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album. But the band said the Doves are just as meaningful as the Grammys.

Doesn’t matter Dove or Grammy we’re just as excited to win a Dove. It’s just the Grammys are more recognized,” the band said. “We were in a category (for the Doves) with some heavy hitters. We were like, ‘Wow, the GMA got it right with all these rockers.’ As Christian rockers we are trying to push ourselves on the industry. The Dove Awards have always been known for contemporary rock, so for us to perform live on the show tonight is a huge step for Christian rock.”

The band talked about the Grammy experience. “We were at the after party hanging with Leeland and John Mayer comes by and says ‘What are you guys here for?’ ” And in a sheepish tone the guys say “Christian music categoy,” but Mayer replied, “Hey you guys are here.”

It was a great feeling.”

Red’s next project will feature a cover of a Duran Duran song, but they didn’t reveal which tune they will do.

Alison Krauss helps Jars on new CD: The Shelter

While in the press room after accepting a Dove Award, Jars of Clay revealed that the band is working on a new project: The Shelter. The new CD will feature guest artists, including Alison Krauss, Jon Foreman of Switchfoot, and Matt Maher.

The new CD merges together the themes of the last two albums by Jars of Clay: the reconciliations of our hearts and the manifestations of relationships. “We were the house band for this CD.”

We are meant to contribute to each other. We are the hands and feet of God. All those cliches — It takes a Village — is true,” the band said. ” We need each other and to encourage each other.”

Jars of Clay’s passion is Blood Water Mission, a charity that provides wells for clean water in Africa while also helping people with AIDS. Jars is currently working on the 1,000 Wells project. Currently there are 850 communities in Africa that are benefiting from clean water, which translates to more than 500,000 people.

The ministry “gives weight to what the things we talk about,” the band said.

KJ-52 sees changes in hip-hop acceptance

KJ-52 attended his first Dove Awards by sneaking in backstage as a part of the press. Back then he says the category was rap-hip-hop-dance and that hip-hop never won. Now it’s a viable category.

How cool is it that I’m sharing the stage with Billy Graham, Sarah Palin.…,” he said. “The church and industry now recognizes it as a viable ministry. How cool is that.”

Bebo Norman Hears from Britney Spears’ Mom

Bebo Norman’s song “Britney” is a reference to Britney Spears’ struggles being played out in the media. The song got a little air-play (it was one of my fave on the CD) but Bebo did hear from Britney’s mom, who thanked him because it was all she wanted to say to her daughter.

Classic Crime gives Denver a shot

The Classic Crime to play Denver's Marquis Theater on April Fool's Day.

Seattle-based band, The Classic Crime, will play Denver’s Marquis Theater on April Fool’s Day. The band describes its music as rock, pop and folk.

Video may have killed the radio star, but the Internet has killed the rock star.

At least that’s what Matt MacDonald thinks. MacDonald, the lead singer of The Classic Crime, which plays Denver’s Marquis Theater on Thursday, April 1, swears that the Internet has been a blessing for his Seattle-based band.

The rock star is dead because you have to humble yourself and mingle with fans,” MacDonald said. “As artists we use the Internet to interact with people, through Facebook, Twitter,” MacDonald said. “We use it as a tool to keep connected with our fans. The music industry is so highly over-saturated right now and everyone has ADD, so you have to keep their attention.

We are one of those bands that hangs out and mingles. We are able to maintain our fan base and grow our fan base because of the Internet.”

One way the band is staying connected is by staging a video contest for their new song, “Solar Powered Life.” The contest offers the winner a $1,000 Apple store gift card.

Battistelli to play MercyMe’s Roadshow in Colorado Springs

Francesca Battistelli will perform in Colorado Springs' World Arena with MercyMe's Roadshow on Sunday, March 21. No tickets required. $10 at the door

Francesca Battistelli will perform in Colorado Springs’ World Arena with MercyMe’s Roadshow on Sunday, March 21. No tickets required. $10 at the door. Doors at 4:30 p.m. Show 6 p.m. Photo special to The Denver Post

Francesca Battistelli seemed destined to make her living on Broadway. Her parents, Mike and Kate Battistelli, met while working on the national tour of “The King and I,” starring Yul Brynner, and their love of theater naturally flowed to their daughter.

Francesca grew up listening to Broadway show tunes, while taking dance and training for musical theater. But as a teenager living in Orlando, Fla., Francesca found her passion in the music side of entertainment. She began playing guitar and started an all-girl pop trio called Bella that toured various House of Blues and Hard Rock venues in the south.

It was a fun couple of years,” Francesca said of the group that blended her singing and dancing talents. “I learned a lot, and it was a great experience.”

While enrolled at the University of Central Florida, Battistelli kept her fingers in the music while earning a bachelor’s degree in English.

I put out an independent record (“Just a Breath”) and played any coffeehouse that would have me,” she said with a chuckle. “Then right after college, I moved to Nashville, and all these doors started opening for me, and I was able to walk right through them.”

By the time Battistelli turned 24 this year, her debut album “My Paper Heart” had garnered a Grammy nomination and five Dove Award nominations, including female vocalist of the year and new artist of the year, along with her songs, “I’m Letting Go,” “Free to Be Me” and “It’s Your Life” being used on television series including ABC’s “Extreme Makeover” and NBC’s “The Biggest Loser.” And she points to her theater background as crucial to her success.

A lot of artists who write songs and sing aren’t so comfortable on stage,” she explained. “I’m just so blessed that I had that early experience on the stage. It has helped me be more comfortable and be myself when I perform.”

Free to be — herself. And to use herself for musical inspiration. Her song “Free to Be Me” came about after she backed into another car.

I was driving home after that and I started to write this chorus, and when I got home, I was like, ‘Hey this is actually pretty good.’ It’s about accepting yourself for who you are, rather than being too concerned about being perfect,” she explained. “God just wants us to come to him as we are. It’s good for me to hear that myself.”

Battistelli calls her music uplifting “soulful pop” with influences of jazz and blues artists along with Broadway great Stephen Sondheim.

I set the bar pretty high,” she said, adding her influences also include Stevie Wonder, Nichole Nordeman, John Mayer and Sara Bareilles.

Hitting that bar seems to be an easy chore for Battistelli, who has experienced the Grammy and Dove award celebrations firsthand. And the differences between the two award shows?

The Grammy Awards were great. Being there with Ringo Starr and Beyonce … It was real neat to see the performances and meet people in the music industry. Whereas the Doves are for our industry. I would say, it’s not as competitive as the Grammys. It’s more like family.”

A family that has embraced the young singer/songwriter, who is sure to bring more honors to her Christian music brethren and genre.

The Rock & Worship Roadshow
MercyMe, David Crowder Band, Family Force 5, Francesca Battistelli, Fee, Remedy Drive and Sidewalk Prophets. $10 at the door, general admission, no ticket required. Doors at 4:30 p.m., show 6 p.m.
