Camping reservations at Heaven Fest close Wednesday

If you plan on camping at Heaven Fest this Saturday you need to secure your site by 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Another thing to remember if you are attending the event Saturday at Union Reservoir is to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. And to help fans stay well-watered, the organizers are giving away FREE water and are encouraging people to bring reusable containers. This will help save thousands of water bottles from going into landfills.

Win a BarlowGirl CD

BarlowGirl is set to perform at Heaven Fest on July 31. Here’s a story that ran in The Denver Post when the sisters were town in support of their album, “How Can We Be Silent.” I found a copy of the CD and if you are the first to send me an e‑mail at lsomers@denverpost.com I’ll send you the CD.

Fighting is a word few Christians embrace, but the sister band BarlowGirl is poised for a knock-down, drag-out on behalf of people who are battered and broken.

On the cover of their new CD, “How Can We Be Silent,” sisters Becca, Alyssa and Lauren Barlow are posed in a boxing ring, dressed in denim and wearing a defiant gaze.

This whole album is about fighting,” said Becca, at 28 the oldest member of the band. “Fighting through the hard times. The whole idea is that it’s time to fight.”

Becca’s favorite track on the CD, “One More Round,” was written after the sisters heard a former football player compare life to a boxing match.

No matter how hard life pushes you down, you have to keep getting up,” Becca said.

Nationwide driver Michael McDowell shows off his faith in the K‑Love car, which now features Premier Christian Cruises as a new sponsor. Photo courtesy to The Denver Post

NASCAR Nationwide driver Michael McDowell lists faith and family first and second under “personal interests” on his bio, and now the No. 81 car he drives will show off his faith tonight at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Ill.

The No. 81 paint scheme for the Dodge-Dealers 250 features the blue and yellow logo of radio station K‑Love, along with new sponsor Premier Christian Cruises.

Because we have enjoyed a long-standing relationship with K‑LOVE, it is a natural fit for us to join them in sponsoring this exciting young driver as he races, not only for the MacDonald Motorsports, but for the glory of God,” Darrell Burrow, Premier’s vice president of sales and customer service, said in a press release. “We hope this is just the beginning of an ongoing partnership with K‑LOVE and the #81 team.”

The race will be telecast live at 6 p.m. (Mountain) on ESPN2. McDowell is 19th in the point standings heading into Saturday’s race.

Tough choices to make as Heaven Fest schedule released

Arvada’s Everfound will grace the main stage at Heaven Fest this year. (Eliza Marie Somers, The Denver Post)

Heaven Fest, which features 70 artists on seven stages, released its schedule today, enabling festival-goers to map out their listening strategies before the July 31st event.

But it will take some tough decisions to see some of the festival’s bigger names.

I know I will have a tough time deciding who to see. The reunion of Petra on the main stage or Disciple on the rock stage? Group 1 Crew on the hip-hop stage vs. Kutless on the mainer? BarlowGirl or Mary Mary OR KJ-52, hmmm? Mr. Del, Thousand Foot Krutch or Casting Crowns? And that’s only looking at three stages.

A nice surprise is Arvada’s Everfound will be moving up to the main stage this year. I’m excited for the band of brothers.

The July 31st festival will be at a new location — Union Reservoir in Longmont — this year. Tickets are whatever you can afford — a nice touch in these tough times.

Hearst hosts two-day music fest, featuring Third Day, Michael W. Smith, Kutless

Third Day is set to perform at NightVision in Olathe this weekend.

With heartache comes feelings of despair and self-doubt, but for Victoria Hearst a heartache transformed her life into one of service and a sort of mending of hearts.

Hearst, granddaughter of media mogul William Randolph Hearst, satisfies her calling to heal through her Praise Him Ministries in Ridgway and the annual NightVision two-day music festival.

After a bad breakup with a boyfriend in December 1995, Hearst took refuge in her bedroom and was flipping through the channels when she came across the Trinity Broadcasting Network. The vision or pastor on the screen struck a chord with Hearst, who prayed, “God, I don’t know what I’m doing anymore. You take the wheel.”

Well, that wheel or compass ultimately led to Ridgway, where as Hearst tells it: God told me to go to Colorado and teach an after-school jazz dance program for middle school girls.

It will be the first of many “visions” or conversations with God that Hearst consults to drive her ministry, including planting the seed for the two-day concert, a bookstore, and of all things her work as a director and choreographer of the Chapel of Hope Choir at the Delta Correctional Center.

Athletes and faith: Should it be played out on field, a la Tim Tebow style?

From the emerald gridirons of college and pro stadiums to the finely sifted infields of ballparks, athletes are showing their faith in various ways.

Tim Tebow is known for the Biblical messages on his eyeblack, which the NCAA has now banned. The Rockies Seth Smith comes to the plate with Christian rock blaring in the background. Fernando Vina made a sign of the cross in the dirt surrounding the batter’s box before taking his stance. Athletes — young and old — point skyward after scoring a goal or hitting a home run. Stephen Strasburg, the Nationals phenom, says in a Washington Post story that he’s deeply religious but keeps his faith underwraps

Do you think athletes should show their faith on the field or should they keep their convictions to themselves?

Woody Paige on Tebow: What do you think?

Tim Tebow

Tim Tebow wears Bible verses on his eye black to show his religious convictions.

Did you read Woody Paige today? He makes a great observation on Tim Tebow and how he is being judged for his religious convictions but other NFL players have escaped the scrutiny. What do you think?
