Switchfoot will perform at Red Rocks on April 16 as part of The Calling ministry.

Switchfoot, the Grammy Award winning band, will hit Red Rocks on April 16 and only because of a young student at Colorado Christian University in Lakewood.

Chrysandra Brunson started a nonprofit organization — The Calling — as an outgrowth of a high school senior project. Brunson’s calling is making sure you know what you are called to do by living intentionally.

The Calling’s mission, as per its website: To inspire, empower and equip the Body of Christ to go after Jesus’ calling on their lives wholeheartedly. In other words, to find out what you are called to do in Jesus’ name during your time on earth.

The Calling’s conference at Red Rocks will also feature Chasen, former major-league player Rex Crain, The Transform DJS, and Lindsy Morton.

Crain turned to motivational speaking after he giving up a career with the Boston Red Sox. I guess he found his true calling.

Brunson proves that with intentional living anything can happen, as she
brings a major crossover rock band to headline this year’s Calling event.

Matthew West turning tables on fans

Matthew West

Singer-songwriter Matthew West will play Thursday at Mission Hills Church in Littleton. His new project, ‘The Story of Your Life’ is based on stories he received from fans about their lives. Photo courtesy of Tec Petaja

For years Matthew West penned songs about his experiences, but with his new project, “The Story of Your Life,” he decided it was time to turn the tables and the microphone. West wanted to give his fans a voice and a chance to tell their stories.

What happened next was a bit surprising to the singer/songwriter. With little fanfare West posted a note on his website asking fans to send in their stories, expecting a few 100 or so. Well, he didn’t receive a hundred stories. He received thousands and thousands of letters from people in all 50 states and 20 countries. Stories that people wanted to share to help other or just to get it off their chests.

I was floored by the response,” said West, who will be playing Thursday, Feb. 24 at Mission Hills Church in Littleton. “Here I was reading story upon story of people’s real life. It was better than TV because this was real. It was great inspiration.”

West spent two months in a Tennessee cabin reading through reams of letters. And while ingesting all of these tales of triumph, brokenness and woe, West discovered something about himself. He became more aware of a void in his life that needed to be filled with love – love for another.

The biggest thing is that it changed the way I live my life,” West said. “Our world is ‘me centered.’ It’s about self-discovery, taking care of No. 1 … and it’s no different for me than anyone else. How can I improve my life? How can I make more money for me and my family?

Brandon Heath finds forgiveness works

Brandon Heath 2008 in Denver

Dove Award male vocalist of the year Brandon Heath will be at the Denver Coliseum on Feb. 3 with TobyMac’s Winter Wonder Slam tour. Heath currently holds the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Christian Radio Audience with ‘Your Love.’ Photo by Eliza Marie Somers

It was an act of forgiveness that helped Brandon Heath heal a relationship with his estranged father and start on his road to a successful music career.

The Dove Award male vocalist of the year in 2009 and 2010 released his third CD, “Leaving Eden,” this past week with a debut at No. 1 on the iTunes Christian Albums chart and already boasts a No. 1 radio hit with “Your Love,” (Billboard’s National Christian Audience). Heath hits Denver on Feb. 3 at the Denver Coliseum with TobyMac’s Winter Wonder Slam tour.

I had a chance to chat with Heath about his music career, last year’s flood in his hometown of Nashville and his interview with Katie Couric on why people are leaving the church.

Brandon Heath expands craft with “Leaving Eden”

Brandon Heath

Multiple Dove Award winner and Grammy nominee Brandon Heath releases Leaving Eden this week. The CD has already produced a No. 1 hit ‑Your Love. Heath will be in Denver on Feb. 3 with TobyMac’s Winter Wonder Slam tour. Photo courtesy of Provident Label Group.

Brandon Heath won the last two Dove Awards for Male Vocalist of the Year with “Give Me Your Eyes,” and “I’m Not Who I Was,” but those tunes pale in comparison with what he offers on “Leaving Eden.”

The CD showcases his vocals more than his first two offerings, with Heath holding notes and expanding his range from the first song “Leaving Eden” to the last “As Long As I’m Here.” And his ability to intertwine daily life into compelling lyrics is evident in “It’s No Good to Be Alone” and “Might Just Save Your Life.”

And listeners are on to him.

Doritos ad offends Catholics?

What’s your take.….
Frito Lay pulled a proposed Super Bowl ad because it mocks the Catholic church. The ad features a priest who needs to find ways to make more money for his church and he gets a sign — a crunch and a soda pop opening — while praying. The next scene the priest is handing out Doritos and Pepsi during communion.

Are you offended by this? The ad has been pulled from the Frito Lay site, but here is Fox News’ Megyn Kelly hosting a debate and if you scroll down you can view part of the ad.

My question to all of you is: Would an ad be made making fun of the Koran or Muslims? So why mock the holiest part of the Catholic Mass?

Is Jesus your reason for the season?

A recent survey by LifeWay Research reveals that only 28 percent of Americans tell the story of the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas.

How do you celebrate Christmas? Do you go to church? Read the Bible or watch religious movies? Is Jesus the reason for the season for you and your family? Listen to Christmas music with religious themes?

Do you give gifts, but don’t consider it a religious holiday? Do you tell your children about Santa Claus? What about the story of the nativity?

Christian artists shine with Christmas offerings

As we round the corner toward Christmas here’s a few of my favorite Christmas CDs from Christian artists that made their way across my desk this season.

Christmas: A Newsboys Holiday” Michael Tait’s range comes out on this CD. His smooth, velvety vocals are reminiscent of Nat King Cole on “The Christmas Song” — one of the all-time great holiday songs. Before joining the newsboys, Tait had this song as a hidden track on his “Lose This Life” CD. Tait’s vocals on this CD might be a surprise to many rock fans, but he translates perfectly to Christmas music.

Don’t like listening to one artist when it comes to Christmas tunes? Then check out these two offerings– “The Essential Christmas Collection” and “Bethlehem Skyline 2.”

Essential is a compilation of artists from the Provident Label Group (a division of Sony) and features some of the best-known Christian artists. From Third Day and Mac Powell getting the CD going with “Angels We Have Heard On High” to Brandon Heath’s “The Night Before Christmas,” Revive’s “The First Noel” to Michael W. Smith’s emotional “All is Well.” There’s a Celtic feel to Casting Crown’s version of “Joy to the World.” Newcomer Kerrie Roberts’ vocal range is displayed on “Oh Holy Night,” and Building 429’s gritty version “What Child is This?” is fun. As the name implies this is an essential addition to your Christmas collection.

Bethlehem features new music from Centricity’s stable of artists — Jason Gray, Downhere, Lanae’ Hale, Sixteen Cities and others. The new songs are a pleasant reprieve from all the oldies. BUT don’t fret, classics such as “Silent Night,” “Away in the Manger,” and “Little Drummer Boy” are in the mix. I really like Downhere’s offerings. For some reason I’m reminded of Queen whenever I hear this band. The new music is reason enough to pick up this CD.

Patrice Wilson’s “A Christmas Blessing” and The Isaacs “Christmas” round out my selections. These were two new artists for me. I enjoy Wilson’s classic renditions of Christmas staples such as “Winter Wonderland,” “Jingle Bells” and “O Come all Ye Faithful.” When listening to this CD, I just wanted to curl up next to a fire with a hot cup of cocoa.

If your looking for some bluegrass tints to your Christmas tunes, then The Isaacs is your way to go. Complete with mandolin, fiddle and banjo the group offers up “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “Silver Bells,” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman.” New songs include “It’s Christmas Time Again”, “Santa Claus is Real” and “The Savior of the World Has Come.”

Enjoy.

Jars celebrates 1,000th well with star-studded benefit

One thousand wells are springing forth fresh clean water in Sub-Saharan Africa all because of one band’s mission. Jars of Clay began Blood: Water Mission, a nonprofit charity, in order to personalize the HIV/AIDS problem in Africa and to bring water to those communities. And six years later, the group is completing its 1,000th well. Here is a video of the band talking about the accomplishment.

To celebrate the accomplishment and to honor its fans, who with just $1 can provide water for one African for a whole year, the band is hosting a “Well Done Celebration” at the legendary Ryman Auditorium on May 10 in Nashville.

The benefit will also feature “friends” of the band, and with so many Christian artists in Nashville it is sure to be a star-studded event. Let’s see Brandon Heath has given up coffee during Lent and has given the money he would spend of java to Blood: Water Mission. Hmmm, tobyMac is a neighbor .…

Tickets at $50 can be purchased through TicketMaster, the Ryman or through Blood:Water Mission.

The charity partners with about 800 communities that serves more than 600,000 people in 11 countries. Along with the wells, four care clinics have been established.

The Arvada-based band will be at Christ Community Covenant Church on Sunday, Dec. 5, and at Front Range Community College in Westminster on Monday, Dec. 13. The Westminster show features a special guest and is the last of the group’s Christmas tour.

For more information about this band of brothers visit their website. Below is a story that ran in The Denver Post before they played Heaven Fest.

After logging tens of thousands of miles chugging up and

with their siblings, the Odnoralov brothers are finally seeing the
fruits of their hard work and patience.

The brothers out of Arvada — and Russia — are creating a buzz in
