Icon for Hire worth hiring for your iPod

Icon for Hire, the newest band out of Tooth & Nail Records, is releasing its debut album “Scripted” on Aug. 23, but you can preview the band’s debut single, “Make a Move,” which is available on iTunes.

The single is infectious rock with a hit of pop from this female-fronted band with explosive, in-your-face riffs and lyrics.

There’s a tension really between heavy rock and pop, but never at the expense where it would overshadow the rock side,” said lead singer Ariel in a release. “The pop part is like the sprinkles on top of a cake, but the actual cake is rich, dark and heavy.”

Love the sprinkles and chocolate cake reference.

The band is out of Decatur, Ill., and has toured the Midwest since 2007. Keep an eye out to see if this band makes its way West. They are known for taking time out to meet with fans.

We’re not the kind of people who want to hang out in the green room all day,” Ariel said. “We get out there to talk to our fans for hours before and after the show and we try to infuse a hopeful element in what we do and say.”

Ben Kasica, who left Skillet in February, is looking to help artists break into the music industry.

This week Skies Fall will release the debut single, “Live for Love” from We Are Leo, a Chicago-based band.

The Nov. 3 concert at Denver University’s Magness Arena promises to be a kickin’ event. The lineup includes founders NewSong, of course, the newsboys, Kutless, Matthew West, Red, Fireflight, KJ-52. Tony Nolan will be the guest speaker. Talk about a lineup.

Newsboys’ Michael Tait summed it up in a release: “I’ve said it before and it surely bears repeating: Winter Jam is our industry’s #1 tour, performing this past winter to more than 520,000 concert goers! NBC edits out “Under God” in Pledge

At the beginning of NBC’s coverage of the U.S. Open, the network showed scenes from our nation’s capital with children reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in the background. But the network edited out “under God” and “indivisible”. And it was edited out twice during the montage, so it was not a mistake but done on purpose. What purpose I don’t know? And don’t say separation of church and state.

About 3 hours into the coverage, announcer Dan Hicks apologized for the omission.
Here’s a YouTube clip of the montage.

The American Center for Law and Justice is sending a letter of protest to NBC and the USGA. You can sign or print out the the letter by going here. What are your thoughts on this omission?

Share memories of “Big Man” Clarence Clemons

E‑Street Band sax player Clarence Clemons died Saturday after suffering a massive stroke last week. He was 69.

Jungleland, Thunder Road, Rosalita, Born to Run. Wow, Thanks for the memories Clarence. I remember seeing Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at the old McNichols Arena back in the early 1980s. (Scalping tickets for $100 with my Olympic weightlifter boyfriend, who was from Jersey and first saw Bruce in the Jersey Shore bars.) I blew out the speakers on my old record player listening to Rosalita. Makes me smile even today. College dorm rooms booming with Bruce on the stereo with Clarence wailing on the sax.

Share your memories of Clarence Clemons.
May you find peace on the other side.

CD review: Thousand Foot Krutch — LIVE

Live at The Masquerade,” Thousand Foot Krutch, Tooth and Nail Records, Release date: June 7, 2011

For its first live CD-DVD, Canadian band Thousand Foot Krutch picked Edmonton’s Rexall Place for the venue. Lead singer Trevor McNevan, a sports fan, notes on the CD sleeve “Live at The Masquerade” that Rexall Place is home to the NHL’s Oilers and Wayne Gretzky’s major accomplishments. It was a place that rocked with four Stanley Cup winners and now comes to life with TFK as an excellent venue for a concert.

I’m not a fan of live CDs, but this CD offers crisp music that lacks the distortion that is often on live music CDs. McNevan’s high energy also comes through loud and clear. It’s a fist-pumping, wanna-scream-and-dance evoking experience. (I was head-banging at my desk while editing sports copy, probably not a good look.)

The live show features all the favorites — “Fire It Up,” “Bring Me to Life,” “E for Extinction,” and the title track — from “Welcome to the Masquerade,” one of the best hard-rock Christian CDs that has come across my desk in the few years that I have been doing this blog. Going old school, McNevan turns to “Rawkfist,” and “Puppet.”

As for not being a fan of live CDs, this one just made me a convert.

The DVD portion of the concert gives the viewer a true sense of McNevan and the band’s energy — it’s nonstop. But I would have liked to have seen more backstage or behind the scenes video of the band such as:
What the band does to tuneup before a show?
Where do the eat?
Do they take naps like hockey players before a big game?
I’d like to see them putting on their makeup.
Stuff like that would put the viewer behind the scenes.

One of my colleagues is just getting into Christian rock, so I’m going to pass this along to him and I’ll let you know what he thinks of this live CD.
