Anyone who attends a Jeremy Camp concert soon finds out that Camp’s life is an open book. He is quick to share his story about his first wife, Melissa, her struggles with ovarian cancer and her death at age 21, just four months after their marriage.

But in the months after her death, Camp could not fathom telling and ultimately reliving those moments surrounding Melissa’s death, especially in front of an audience.

Grammy Christian artists need a voice

TobyMac won a Grammy Award on Sunday for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album. But wouldn’t it be nice to see him perform at the Grammys?

If you watched Sunday’s Grammy Awards, no you didn’t miss the winners of the gospel music categories. The awards were dished out before the prime-time TV show. But wouldn’t it be nice if the mainstream event invited TobyMac or Kirk Franklin to perform? I think it would open up some eyes to how Christian music has evolved. I mean really, how many performances by Justin Timberlake do we really need?

So in case you missed it here’s a quick rundown of the winners in the Christian music genre.

Gospel artist Kirk Franklin won two Grammy Awards, garnering Best Gospel Song for “Help Me Believe” and Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album for “The Fight of My Life.”

The Blind Boys of Alabama, who played the Gothic Theater this past summer, won Best Traditional Gospel Album for “Down in New Orleans.”

Alive and Transported” transported rock/rap artist TobyMac to the top in the Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album. CeCe Winans won Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album for “Thy Kingdom Come.” Best Gospel Performance went to Mary Mary for “Get Up.” The Gaither Vocal Band secured the Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Album for its “Lovin’ Life.”

Colorado key missing from Tomlin’s collection

Chris Tomlin’s easy personality came through during his concert Friday at the Wells Fargo Theater. Check out his trip to Wahoo’s on 16th Street Mall on his website. Photos by Eliza Marie Somers

Chris Tomlin wants a key. A key to Colorado that is.
“You don’t know how bad I want to live here,” Tomlin told a crowd at Wells Fargo Theater on Friday. “I want to be the official worship band of Colorado. Maybe I can get a key to the state?”

Tomlin’s enthusiasm for the Centennial State came through in his performace, starting with his roaring rendition of “Sing, Sing, Sing” and ending with his encore with opening band Israel Houghton and New Breed.

Tomlin changing the world one song at a time

Chris Tomlin says he has a responsibility to write songs for people to sing and worship God. Tomlin played Friday, Feb. 6 at the Wells Fargo Theater. He also is nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album. Photo courtesy of CMA Media Promotions

Barry Manilow may have belted out the lyrics, “I write the songs that make the whole world sing,” but in reality that songwriter my well be Chris Tomlin, a Christian rock musician.

Even if you are unaware of his name or presence, you know Tomlin, or more to the point his words have been on the tip of your tongue if you have visited a church or worship service in the last several years.

According to Christian Copyright Licensing International, a company that licenses songs to churches, “How Great is Our God,” by Tomlin has been the most requested song by churches in the United States for the past four years. And in its August 2008 report, CCLI lists four other songs by Tomlin in the top 13 – “Forever,” “Holy is the Lord,” “Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone),” and “We Fall Down.”

Sound familiar now? You can sing-along with Tomlin on Friday, Feb. 6 at the Wells Fargo Theater in Denver. Tickets are $32 and $25 at Ticketmaster.

It’s pretty heady stuff being what Time magazine called “the most often sung contemporary artist in U.S. congregations every week,” but don’t think Tomlin is about holding airs. He’s down to earth and extremely humble. When asked to describe his music, he didn’t give the standard responses of guitar-laden riffs or melodic harmonies, but, “It’s thousands and thousands of voices singing, praising God,” he said.

Brandon Heath gives a free concert at Crossroads Church in Wheat Ridge in conjunction with the Denver Rescue Mission’s toy drive. The concert was sponsored by K‑Love radio station.

It’s been a whirlwind ride the past few months for Brandon Heath. Yes, he’s not who he was after winning the 2008 Dove Award for new artist of the year and after his hit “I’m Not Who I Was” received a Dove nomination.

Yes, things have changed for Heath but mostly on the outside. Deep down he’s still the same old Brandon.

Things have changed, but honestly with me they haven’t,” Heath said Tuesday before his free concert at Crossroads Church in Wheat Ridge. “I don’t mean to say that to be humble, but I just don’t feel that I have changed all that much. You could ask any of my friends, and a lot of them have said that nothing about me has changed.

Switchfoot: No labels, please

[photopress:Switchfoot_1_1_2_3.jpg,full,pp_image]

Switchfoot plays the Broomfield Event Center, Sunday, Oct. 12 with the Music Builds Tour, benefitting Habitat for Humanity.

Finding the right band name is paramount to musicians. A good moniker can draw listeners who are just curious or if it hits the wrong chord can turn off scores of people.

Just as crucial is being labeled — be it a hip-hop, rock, indie or rap band. These labels are why Switchfoot, which plays the Broomfield Event Center on Sunday, shuns the Christian rock tag.

Christianity is faith, it’s not a genre of music,” said Switchfoot lead guitarist Drew Shirley. “We want to be music for all people. We’ve played, campuses, bars, clubs. … When you have this labeling it closes the doors to our music, instead of people just listening to it to see if they like it.

Does it all add up to a time to repent or is it just global warming? Are they Biblical warnings? What do you think? Let us know.

Rambo broke color barriers

Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Vince Gill are just some of the artists who recorded songs written by gospel singer and songwriter Dottie Rambo. Rambo, 74, died in a tour bus accident this past Sunday on her way to a Mother’s Day concert in Missouri. Some of her songs are standards such as “I Go to the Rock.”
She was one of the first Southern gospel artists to break racial barriers by using African-American backup singers. In 1968 Rambo caused a stir in the industry when she won a Grammy for best soul gospel performance. She was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame last year.
